http://www.ilboccaccio.com/ There are some things that are just unexplainable, and the most unexplainable of all is falling in love. I remember my encounter with it like it was just yesterday. I can vividly remember everything that I felt that night at the beach Italian restaurant—the anxiety of going on a first date, the awkwardness of the first few minutes and the electricity that flowed in and out of my body every time I heard her laugh. She had a way of laughing heartily, so full of life, and that just did it for me.
We were in the same art class in college. I was the Italian boy with messy black hair while she was this petite girl who took down copious notes. As she bowed her head to scribble, her blonde hair would fall down from being tucked behind her ears. And after days of arguing with myself, I finally asked her out on a date. I was a Mediterranean boy who grew up in a very Italian family. So it wouldnt come as a surprise that I chose a seaside restaurant to have our date.
She arrived in a white dress, a picture of perfection as she was stepping into the restaurant. It was as if the words were literally taken from my mouth and for a moment I could not speak. She broke the ice by telling me that I had picked a wonderful place for our date. We were served our seafood meal. Being an authentic beach Italian restaurant, the food was superb, everything was delectable and she thought so too as well. I had intended her to enjoy the food but somehow I just couldnt begin to start asking things about her that our restaurant conversation mainly centered on the exquisite food and Italian cuisine, which was quite my expertise. The conversation was going great but it was a little bit too casual. Our talk included nothing of her, nothing of me and nothing of what we both could be. I was afraid that after the date shed see me only as a good friend and nothing more because I was too shy. Just when we were about to take our leave, she said something which till this day I am thankful that she did. It was a warm summer evening; the stars were all out, providing a perfect silhouette on the water. She asked me if I didnt mind walking on the beach with her. Glad that I had a second chance, I immediately said yes.
We walked along the beach, the tiny white grains of sand massaging our feet as went along. She was walking barefoot now and the sight of her feet delightfully kicking the sand and playing with the water just captured me. From talk about the stars and the moon followed our plans after college, our dreams and even a little bit of our frustrations. And in between pauses I got to stare into her mesmerizing blue eyes. The gentle breeze blowing her hair gracefully and that captivating smile made it almost irresistible for me to stop look at her. That would be the first of the many nights that we would stroll along the beach after enjoying a scrumptious Italian meal.
I married her soon after graduation and now we have three children to show for our love. Although marriage may have its up and downs, we never fail to fall in love once more with each other through those long walks. Every couple has a special place or a special memory of love in time. Ours would be a hearty meal at a beach Italian restaurant before a romantic walk by the beach.
